Can you tell us the provenance of the top image? It seems like a birch is being used but the setup looks somewhat more modern (ie not victorian) than is normally the case – the other images being a case in point.
Not sure – but I think it is from a 1930s set – there was a school of realism at this time and rumours abound that real scenarios were pursued at this time – ie as many shoots do now rather than the posed tableaux of the earlier era.
