From the top shelf

11May10

About a month or so ago you may have noticed a new link appear on the right with the legend: British Spanking Magazines. Back in March this year a this new blog was launched to republish many of the great stories and pictures from old spanking mags, such as Blushes, Roue, Janus, Februs, Swish and Kane.

Now some out there may never have heard of these magazines, but before the days of the Internet, these magazines were the only real outlets for the spanking community not only in Britain, but also often in the world.

These publications had a proud legacy. The legendary Harrison Marks, who had been an erotic mag purveyor since the 1950s, started many of them. If anyone doubts the influence of these magazines you only have to look at any spanking blog today and you will still see the pictures that were mainstay of these magazines.

Although some of these magazines still survive, they have not adapted to the web very well and their websites are often static adverts for a paper product, the Internet equivalent of those shops that used to wrap their erotica in cellophane to stop punters viewing the merchandise. They have never quite got that to sell online you have to build traffic and if you want to build traffic, you have to give the punters a reason to keep coming back.

Many of these magazines were read for the ‘true’ stories included on the letters page. A function that is now often served by the Boards such as Sometimes a girl and even the Voice. However, it must be said that they also carried great stories by the likes of Richard Manton and quite high-class photography.

The picture above, taken from Janus, is an example of the stylish photo shoots that were typical. The one above features Anneke who was more famous as a spankee than in the dom mode of this set.

  1. Hi!

I stopped by because I thought you had written a post about my blog. I use the same title on a weekly basis. Oh, well, it was interesting tto read about those old magazines that were indeed “top shelf” material.

DJ, I remember those magazines well, before the internet, they were all that were available.
Yes, and like Hermione, I also thought it was a plug for her posts of the same name.

Evidence for the pre-internet existence of a spanko culture, indeed. Early ‘net posts like Wulfram drew extensively from old magazine scans. I guess back in the 1970s I didn’t realize how much better those mags were than the typical porn of the time, since the spanking mags were the only ones I read.

Would be interested to read more behind-the-scenes lore from that era if any comes your way, Damien.
