A Good Old American Tradition

05Sep14

college caningSam is a contributor who from time to time sends in some interesting snippets and pictures. This old picture is unusual not only because of the subject matter, two young women about to be caned in public, but because the faces have been pixelated out.

Sam reports that the picture came from a family blog with some genuine old family photographs on it and that the faces were blurred to protect the innocent. Sam doesn’t know the back story but says the caption read ‘Grandmother (pictured in white) at her old Alma Mata back in 1928.’

Who knows the truth of it, but the use of the cane and the posture does suggest that this is not just a posed-for birthday spanking picture. But maybe it is a ladies’ college or some such as the girls look too old for high school.

  1. I am always intrigued by these old pictures. I want to know the story (and see the caning of course…)

It is an odd one isn’t it?

The pixallation is not mine which suggests that someone wanted to protect the guilty.

This picture has the appearance of authenticity because the cane in a public setting–indeed an outdoor setting–is applied over clothing rather than on the bare. I would be more likely to accept as authentic a caning on the bare if the caning occurred in private or in a play-club venue catering to people with similar interests. While such establishments existed later, I don’t know if they existed in the 1920s. But the setting doesn’t appear to resemble such an establishment.

If the picture was taken in the 1920s, it was taken with non-digital equipment and the image was later scanned and at that time the faces were pixilated.

Obviously the pixalation is from the digital age and it looks like a shop or business (could be a school even) and not domestic. I might say early sorority but the woman looks too old?

  3. CANING IN THIS STYLE ACROSS SKIRTS AND UINDERWEAR WOULD STILL BE VERY PAINFUL AND IS PROBABLY AUTHENTIC
