Russian discipline in art

22Nov13

Russian whipping Russian whipping Russian whipping Russian whippingHere is a set(?) found on different Tumblr’s. It isn’t clear who the artist (or artists) are but despite the differing styles two were grouped as if they might be the same. Taken together they contrast and compare the notorious medieval to 19th century traditional domestic corporal punishment with the Soviet era (note the picture of Stalin and the Babushka in the last picture).

It is probable that they originated on Deviant Art, but the couldn’t be traced to identify the artist. Anyway, enjoy and if you do know where the credit goes sing out.

DJ, these are great drawings. The first appeals to me the most because it is rendered in minimalist style which is my favorite. Look how nicely the girl is grasping the outer edge of the bench in preparation for her thrashing. The second comes in second in my mind because It appears to depict judicial discipline but I wish the image of a murderous dictator did not appear on the wall.

I would be curious to know, if it would be appropriate to ask, who folks think the observers are in the second drawing and what is going through their minds as they watch.

One persons murderous dictator is another uncle Joe ;)

It serves to place it though doesn’t it? :)

You are right, DJ. It makes quite clear where the action is taking place.

Last two are probably by Kindinov.

I found the four pictures on spanking-art.tumblr. The first two are by Andrej Volkov. As already indicated, the last two are by Kindinov.

Thanks for the full answer – but they are all Russian then?

I got that from the style of dress in the last picture and Stalin only (admittedly a give away). :)

The site I found included “Art by Andrej Volkov” with the pictures so I assumed it was the artist’s name. I was beginning to wonder if that was the case because I couldn’t find information on him. If you are ever looking for some of his drawings you will have better luck using Andrew Wolkoff. He is Russian as is Kindinov.

    Thanks Errinn :)
